Alvarez & Marsal Expands Executive Benefits Consulting Group

Date: Nov 25, 2013 @ 07:15 AM

Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal announced that Greg Mateja, the former head of risk integration at ING U.S. and a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, has joined A&M’s Executive Benefits Consulting division as a managing director based in Greenwich, CT.  He joins a rapidly expanding practice, which recently added managing director Arthur Woodard.

With more than 30 years of insurance leadership experience, Mateja specializes in strategic risk and capital analyses.  His primary areas of concentration are in nonqualified plans, executive compensation and institutional life insurance arrangements supporting supplemental benefit liabilities.  At A&M, Mateja will focus on developing and funding executive compensation plans, working in collaboration with senior management and boards of directors using the firm’s proprietary databases and tools.

“As regulatory requirements evolve and shareholder scrutiny mounts, companies across the industry spectrum continue to face challenges when structuring and funding executive compensation and benefit programs,” said Bud Schiff, Managing Director and Head of A&M Executive Benefits Consulting.  “We are expanding the breadth of A&M resources available to address this need and welcome Greg’s deep knowledge of complex financial, risk, and capital matters. In addition, his designation as an actuary makes him an outstanding addition to our growing team.”

At ING U.S., Mateja was responsible for asset-liability management, economic capital, risk-reporting and risk appetite.  Before that, he was vice president of corporate development and strategic initiatives at The Hartford where he sourced, analyzed, negotiated and closed 18 acquisitions and divestitures.  He has extensive experience with reinsurance, financial modeling, and software development.

Mateja earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/economics from Union College.  He is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a Chartered Financial Analyst.
