Alvarez & Marsal Bolsters Energy Practice, Appoints Rahl and Halverson as Managing Directors

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) announced the appointments of Gary Rahl and Joseph Halverson as Energy practice Managing Directors. Their joining builds on the recent appointment of Energy practice Senior Advisor Jay Johnson, expands the firm’s clean energy and strategic operations capabilities, and demonstrates A&M’s commitment to help clients navigate challenges and drive change.   
 
Rahl specializes in public-private collaborations, from strategy through implementation, to make clean energy successful at scale for clients. He focuses on funding and finance strategies, clean energy and renewable energy performance improvement, grid modernization, industrial decarbonization, transportation and building electrification, distributed energy resources, energy market enablement and data/digital strategies.
 
Halverson is noted for his operational strategy expertise and extensive oil and gas, mining and industrial experience across the globe. He advises clients on large scale operating model changes, operational improvements, and upskilling technical talent for large energy and mining clients.
 
Managing Director and Energy Practice Leader Lee Maginniss highlighted the practice’s operational depth and strategic know-how with over 500 energy consultants globally and operations in over 30 countries. Prior to joining A&M, Rahl served as a Managing Director with Deloitte Consulting and as an Executive Vice President with Booz Allen Hamilton. In both roles, he built and led energy and climate consulting practices to drive growth and market penetration. His key engagements include: 

  • Leading and developing a statewide energy data access platform to spark growth of clean energy solutions in New York;
  • Providing financial business model and market development analysis to    a regional clean hydrogen hub project portfolio;
  • Designing and securing federal funding for energy efficiency and electric vehicle charging programs in Pennsylvania and Virginia;
  • Managing investments in breakthrough energy technologies for the US Department of Energy;
  • Structuring over $10 billion in energy projects at US military bases for origination.

Halverson joins A&M from Boston Consulting Group where he served as a Partner and a member of the firm’s People & Organization practice and Energy practice. His notable assignments include the: 

  • Functional and business unit transformations of multiple global oil and gas companies;
  • Evaluation and recommendations for divesting a large integrated oil and gas company’s global gasoline retailer;
  • Value chain improvement project for an integrated liquified natural gas (LNG) business unit.

Rahl earned bachelor’s degrees in aeronautics & astronautics and humanities from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
 
Halverson earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and holds both an MBA and a J.D. from Northwestern University.
