Haynes and Boone Appoints Successor to Powers as Managing Partner

July 21, 2020, 08:00 AM

Haynes and Boone, LLP has selected Taylor H. Wilson, partner and co-chair of the firm’s Investment Management Practice Group, to succeed Tim Powers as the firm’s managing partner effective Jan. 1, 2021. Wilson will be the fourth managing partner in Haynes and Boone’s 50-year history.

Wilson has spent his entire 30-year legal career at Haynes and Boone, helping to build the Investment Management Practice Group and serving as a cornerstone for other corporate practices. He has served in many leadership roles at Haynes and Boone, including on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and as Chair of the Partner Compensation Committee. He also has served as the firm’s hiring partner and as the founding chair of its Alumni Committee. Wilson was instrumental in creating Haynes and Boone’s 2025 Plan, the firm’s central planning document, which lays out an ambitious vision for growth into new markets and practice areas.

“Taylor is a consummate lawyer and proven leader, who has been integral to building multiple practices and departments at the firm and has mentored scores of lawyers across our offices,” said Powers, whose term as managing partner expires at the end of the year. “He embodies our client-first culture and is the perfect person to help ensure that we continue to develop new and improved ways to deliver value to our clients.”

Powers, who turns 65 years old this summer, will remain as managing partner through 2020. Per the firm partnership’s age restrictions, he will then step down from management duties but will remain active in firm affairs and his practice for a transitional period of time.

“I look forward to working closely with Tim to ensure a seamless transition,” Wilson said. “He has served as a role model for how a managing partner can work collaboratively with our lawyers and clients to unify around a common vision of a firm that values teamwork and client service above individual acclaim. I am also honored to have been selected for this role at such a promising time for Haynes and Boone, which has grown steadily throughout its 50-year history and is poised for continued expansion.”

A graduate of Amherst College and SMU Dedman School of Law, Wilson works primarily from Dallas, but also spends considerable time in the firm’s New York and London offices. He has been a member of the American Bar Association’s Venture Capital and Private Equity Committee for 20 years and has served the Texas Bar’s Business Law Section for even longer. In his practice, Wilson has created and advised investment funds around the world, earning recognition in The Best Lawyers in America (Woodward/White Inc.) listing for the past 13 years.

Wilson and his wife Kathleen, who is a Professor of Genetics at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, have two sons. A pillar in the Dallas community, Wilson served as President of the Board of Trustees of St. Mark’s School of Texas from 2014 to 2016, together with chairing the school’s Alumni Association and multiple committees and fundraising initiatives. Wilson also serves as a director for Capital for Kids, a network of volunteer professionals involved in investment management who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk children in North Texas.

Wilson also is an active member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, which has been transforming kids’ lives for over 100 years. Club members support the Momentous Institute, which builds and repairs social emotional health for kids and families through education, therapeutic programs, research and training. He is passionate about helping underprivileged children to ensure they have a good education and a chance to excel.

Haynes and Boone is an international corporate law firm with offices in Texas, New York, California, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., London, Mexico City and Shanghai, providing a full spectrum of legal services in energy, technology, financial services and private equity.
