October 15, 2024, 08:12 AM

Alvarez & Marsal Tax (A&M Tax), an affiliate of leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), has expanded its Restructuring Tax offering by appointing Howard Steinberg, Managing Director and Head of Global Restructuring Tax Services. Steinberg joining the firm marks a significant advancement both strengthening A&M Tax’s capabilities and advancing the build-out of its premier global restructuring Tax practice to align with A&M’s reputation as the most renowned restructuring firm in the industry.

Experienced in both in-court and out-of-court restructurings, Steinberg joins A&M with a storied career advising on many of the largest and most complex U.S. bankruptcies. He works with debtor companies and creditor groups on complex restructurings as well as mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

As one of the leading M&A and Tax Restructuring specialists in the U.S., Steinberg spent 33 years at KPMG, where he was a partner and most recently served as the Global Head of Restructuring, Tax and Legal, for KPMG International. He previously served as Partner in Charge of M&A Tax for KPMG US. Following his time at KPMG, he served as Houlihan Lokey’s Managing Director and Global Head of Tax Restructuring. At Houlihan, he launched and co-led the firm’s clean energy tax credit brokerage and financing practice.

Ernesto (Ernie) Perez, Global Practice Leader of A&M Tax, remarked, “We have built a distinguished Restructuring Tax Practice and are firmly committed to bringing on premier advisors to serve our clients. Our reputation and ambitious international growth plans are attracting best in class talent like Howard. His respected brand, expertise and leadership will further elevate the business and help to solidify market eminence domestically and internationally by strengthening our capacity to manage complex global restructurings.”

Along with advising numerous debtor companies, creditors and acquirers of distressed assets, Steinberg served as an expert witness for the Toys “R” Us bankruptcy. His other notable debtor side engagements include Toys “R” Us, CIT Group, Caesars Entertainment, Frontier Communications, Zohar Corp and American Airlines. His notable creditor tax engagements include Purdue Pharma and SVB Financial Group.

Steinberg noted, “A multi-year restructuring cycle is likely, given the high levels of corporate leverage, elevated interest rates, disruptive technological innovation and geopolitical risks. A&M’s respected restructuring tax capabilities, combined with its operational heritage, integrated platform and freedom from audit conflicts, well positions the firm to lead clients through the complex restructuring cycles in the years to come.”

Steinberg earned a bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Columbia University School of Business. He is registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) in New York and holds Series 79, SIE and Series 63 certification. He is a licensed CPA in New York and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA).
