Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has expanded its Healthcare Industry Group with the addition of Arnold Schaffer and Ronald Vance who join as Managing Directors based in Los Angeles and Washington D.C., respectively. Each brings significant executive healthcare management experience, working with both payers and providers.
Schaffer has an extensive background providing operational direction to healthcare industry leaders, advising on such matters as mergers and strategic alliances; network development for accountable care; and strategic, organizational and cultural corporate integration. With a respective focus on value creation, Vance assists clients with revenue generation, product development, operational improvements, provider network contracting and management, mergers and acquisitions, and turnarounds.

Schaffer most recently served as Founder, President and CEO of Mobius Healthcare Consulting. Before that, he held executive positions at numerous large healthcare systems including Providence Health & Services, the third largest not-for-profit health system in the United States, where he oversaw billions of dollars in annual revenue; Universal Health Services, where he served as CEO of numerous hospitals, the startup of two greenfield hospitals and as a regional executive; and Catholic Healthcare West (Dignity Health), where he served as CEO of several Tenet facilities. He also served as Chairman of the Board of both the California Hospital Association (CHA) and the Hospital Association of Southern California. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, he holds a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University, San Antonio.
Vance is the former President of the Payer Solutions division at CIGNA, where he and his team provided network, clinical, pharmacy, and behavioral solutions for the nation’s top health insurers and administrators. He also served as founder and President of Salus Strategy Group, a boutique consultancy that provided strategic guidance and support to companies across the health services and insurance sectors. His experience includes leading the business turnaround of a regional, hospital-owned PPO, and the creation of a new business unit for a managed care organization which delivered measurable earnings growth on a per-share basis.
