Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC (A&M Taxand), an affiliate of leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), has bolstered its Transfer Pricing practice with the appointment of Washington, D.C.-based Richard (Dick) McAlonan, as a Senior Advisor. Mr. McAlonan’s appointment addresses the increasing need for transfer pricing advisory and assistance with dispute resolution and supply chain structuring.
Mr. McAlonan is a transfer pricing specialist and has served as the first Director of the Internal Revenue Services’ consolidated Advance Pricing and Mutual Agreement Program (APMA). In this role, he led a team of more than 100 IRS economists, lawyers and accountants who negotiated hundreds of Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs) and competent authority agreements with tax authorities in several countries, including Canada, Japan, South Korea and the U.K. Under his leadership of APMA, the number of completed APAs increased to more than 140 from about 50 to 60 annually.
“Dick’s significant experience in global transfer pricing and dispute resolution further enhances A&M Taxand’s focus on serving our clients’ needs for advisory services within the increasingly complex tax environment and global supply chain structuring,” says Ernesto R. (“Ernie”) Perez, the Global Practice Leader of Alvarez & Marsal Taxand.
Marc Alms, Managing Director in A&M Taxand, adds, “Our domestic and foreign-headquartered company clients will benefit from Dick’s government insights and knowledge of administration practices as they seek effective procedures to deal with transfer pricing and global tax affairs. Dick’s experience at the IRS during the period of recovery from the 2008-2009 global financial crisis is particularly relevant for clients as they grapple with COVID-19 uncertainties.”
In addition to his government service, Mr. McAlonan worked for several Big Four accounting firms handling transfer pricing planning and dispute resolution matters. Prior to joining A&M, he served as EY’s Director of National Tax Transfer Pricing Controversy and Americas Director of Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs).
Mr. McAlonan earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Villanova University, an MBA from Temple University and a master’s degree in taxation from Pace University. Mr. McAlonan is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and is a member of American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).
